In Alberta, you must be at least 18 years old to purchase and consume alcohol in a restaurant, at a sports game, concert, etc. Outside of those parameters, sentences range from a fine up to $10,000, probation, imprisonment up to 6 months, and/or removal from Canada (ss. 116 & 117 GLA). SEXUAL ASSAULT Any sexual act that happens without consent is sexual assault. Consent is necessary regardless of gender, identity, age, race or relationship status. » You must be 16 years old to consent. » You have the right to change your mind & stop your consent anytime. » Someone who is impaired or passed out cannot consent. » A person in authority (teacher, doctor, coach etc.) cannot seek consent from you. DRUGS Cocaine, fentanyl, oxy, heroin, etc., are available illegally. People also abuse prescription drugs. You risk conviction and/or removal from Canada if you possess, consume, and/or distribute these substances. Sentences range from a fine up to $5000, probation, and/or imprisonment from 6 months to 18 years (ss. 4 & 5 CDSA). OW? You risk conviction and/or removal from Canada. Sentences range from probation and/or imprisonment from 90 days to life (ss. 271-273). CANNABIS Personal consumption is now legal in Canada. Anyone over the age of 18 is permitted to possess a max of 30g of dried cannabis and/or have no more than 4 pot plants growing in your home. Cannabis edibles are not legal or regulated across Canada (yet). If you choose to buy pot legally, there are a few dispensaries shops in Calgary. Smoking pot (or vaping) in public is not permitted as per City of Calgary bylaws, and you cannot smoke near children or schools. Smoking pot on campus is not permitted. Driving impaired is illegal regardless of what impairs you (drugs or alcohol). Should you be found in the driver’s seat of a vehicle, even if the car is parked, you could be charged. You risk conviction and/or removal from Canada and sentences range from a fine, probation, and/or imprisonment from 18 months to life (s. 320.14). DATING VIOLENCE It is illegal to physically or sexually assault any person, even if you are married, dating, family, and/or living together. Violence can also be verbal, financial, and/or emotional. You risk conviction and/or removal from Canada. Sentences range from probation and/or imprisonment from 6 months to life (ss. 266-268). DID YOU KN OW?
