The tool – The I-SKILLS Résumé – easily understood, open-ended form for data collection. Phase 1 – the first half of a 10-year study :  5 cohorts,  178 students  306 résumés I-SKILLS Résumé introduced in first year, returned by email to students in 2nd and 3rd year for updating. Data analysed based on phenomenographic protocol outlined by Bruce in 7 faces of information literacy. This allows for seeing individuals’ progress and trends. I-Skills Résumé (Information Skills and Knowledge for Lifelong Learning Success) Personal: (Name, Course, Semester, Year) Special Expertise: (What kinds of info or topics are you especially adept at finding/evaluating/using) Education: (What classes, training reading, self teaching etc. have you done in the area of information skills) Experience: (what types of information can you find and what tools can you use – e.g. article databases, library catalogues, deep web sites, laws, addresses, etc) Other: (Anything else pertaining to your information finding/evaluating/usage skills you'd like an employer to know, e.g. citing/analysing/bias checking) The I-SKILLS Résumé benefits students:  Prompts reflection  Shows growth over time  Helps identify gaps in learning The I-SKILLS Résumé benefits instructors:  Shows areas of strength, gaps  Provides info on new tools  Shows what ‘stuck’ and what didn’t The I-SKILLS Résumé benefits researchers: Captures interesting data Shows growth over time Cheap and simple to administer Adaptable to many skills/knowledge domains  Relatively simple to analyse     I-Skills Résumé (Information Skills and Knowledge for Lifelong Learning Success) 1st–plain, 2nd–italic 3rd-bold Personal: Clark Kent, Journalism 4425, Winter 2008 Special Expertise: • Can find anything to do with hockey and heavy metal music • using the Mount Royal databases to find articles from scholarly journals • using Google ( including Google News and Scholar ) • can find a variety of topics through the mount royal databases in order to find background information for particular stories. • can locate useful journalism sites providing story ideas, audience input, international issues, and useful networking tools. Education: • ACOM 2207-searching the Mount Royal databases for news stories • ACOM 2231-Chicago Style citations • ENGL 2201-searching the Mount Royal databases for research purposes • ACOM 3383-locating and identifying social research • Work on the Journal newspaper taught me how to work quickly • Summer internship at Black Press – learned to use their archives • ACOM 4407-locating technology sites related to journalism and the industry. • ACOM 4425-locating MRC and public databases for research and potential job requirements. Experience: • Experienced with online catalogues for MRC • Adept at using search engines such as Google • Can easily locate source information and background information for a story through online means such as Google groups, online forums and personal web pages. • Can quickly locate statistics using a variety of government sources • Learning social networking sites and their beneficiary tools for connecting with industry officials and information. • Can write for, participate in and search blogs for relevant information.
