- The Alberta OER Journal Club was started in Autumn of 2018 as a way of continuing the OER discussion in Alberta, following the end of the provincial government's one-time funding. The journal club hosts monthly Twitter chats where guest facilitators guide a discussion on a piece of OER literature. This presentation will review the background and development of this project, provide an overview of the format and best practices, and highlight the project's significance and surprises.

- Information literacy (IL) is both a discipline and transdisciplinary skill (ACRL, 2015). - There is both a feeling of excitement and hesitation when mentioning open educational resources (OERs) to university educators. The idea of being an “open educator” and using only openly licensed teaching materials sounds noble. Such an approach has the potential to benefit students on multiple fronts. - Soon-to-be Professor Emerita, Margy MacMillan is currently a Senior Researcher with Project Information Literacy on their latest study "How Students Engage with News". The study surveyed over 5,800 students across 11 U.S. institutions about where they encountered news, what tools they used, what topics they followed and shared, and the role of news in their lives. It also asked specifically about the differences between their personal and academic news habits. - This paper examines the continuum from "closed" to "open" for both open educational resources (OER) and open courses. The primary focus is to evaluate what instructional choices are needed to increase the openness of courses and how such openness impacts the student experience. - Community-service learning (CSL), which is grounded in John Dewey’s theory of learning through experience (1938), allows students the opportunity to participate in a service experience that is integrated within the curriculum, meets the actual needs of the community, and incorporates critical reflection to connect their academic learning with their experiences.
