- If ever there was a topic most debated, it is prostitution. Beliefs about it vary greatly, from one end of the spectrum to the other, and they vary within provinces and across countries. In Canada, each province has the autonomy to administer the federal law and justice system how it sees fit, which is often driven by the ruling political party at the time. And furthermore, you may find that within one province, the various municipal and/or provincial policing agencies have different mandates when it comes to enforcing prostitution laws and choosing subjects to target. All of this adds to the complexity of supporting “the best” idea to address prostitution. Prostitution involves two...

- Jerome Bruner has helped to shape the notion of constructivism, which is of prime significance when looking at pedagogy in games and much of the learning that occurs in games is constructive. In one of his more recent works, “The Culture of Education” (1996), he discusses the importance of nine tenets to the development and maintenance of culture. Many of these touch on recurring themes in many discussions of games (Beavis, 1999; Kafai, 2001; Wolf & Perron, 2003). Bruner believes that “education is not an island, but part of the continent of culture.” (1996, p11) The same can be said of games. Bruner’s tenets guide such a ‘psycho-cultural’ approach to education and this paper will examine...

- Have you ever watched a child or teenager playing a videogame they really liked? Do you wonder what it is about this game that has them so completely engrossed? Part of the answer is that games are motivating, rewarding, engaging, and challenging, all at the same time. The kids will probably just tell you they’re fun. But when you think about it, fun and engagement are synonymous, and engagement is something we all want for our learners. Games also show us that challenge sells – when was the last time you heard that a game was popular because it was easy? Does a game loose its appeal once it has been won? Rarely. The game looses its appeal when players have learned all they can from it....

- We have always appropriated whatever technologies are available to us for use as technologies for instruction. This practice may well date back as far as human communication itself. The practice of “studying the masters” is also an old and respected one, and using this perspective we can take advantage of the opportunities afforded us in studying outstanding examples of commercial digital games as “educational” objects, even if they weren’t produced by professional educators. By examining successful games through this lens we can progress towards an understanding of the essential elements of ‘good’ games and begin to discuss the implications this holds for the deliberate design of...

- Recently published reports suggest the role of the muscles and tendons of the lower limbs are an important factor in determining the energy cost of running (Erun). Specifically, there exists a link between the mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon (AT) and Erun but the impact of the muscle’s energy cost is not considered. To date, very little is known regarding the interaction between AT stiffness, muscle energetics and Erun. Further, little is known about the AT stiffnessenergetics relationship in female runners. Therefore, the overall goal of this thesis was to explore the relationship between AT stiffness and muscle energetics in male and female distance runners. The first study...

- Are you preparing to teach online due to the coronavirus emergency, but need a place to start? One simple way to guide your planning is to think about online learning (like many forms of learning) as involving three key elements (Anderson, 2008): Student-Content, Student-Student, and Educator-Student interactions. This infographic illustrates these three interaction elements and provides related examples. References: Anderson, T. 2008. The theory and practice of online learning (Chapter 2, 2nd ed.). - The author designed and taught the first course on digital game based learning at the author’s institution which was also one of the first of its kind in North America. The course has been taught twice: once in the spring of 2005 and again in the summer of 2006. The design of the course is outlined and participant reaction is profiled. Topics discussed in the class included violence in games, up-to-date research on gaming and gamers, and how games might be used effectively in classroom settings. Also included in the paper are comments on some of the games that were examined, as well as the nature of the projects completed by the participants. Key elements crucial for teacher preparation...

- Presentation from ASCILITE 2018 based upon a paper published in proceedings: While the academic community and the general public often refer to learners today as inherently tech-savvy digital natives, those in the educational technology community have long advocated for a move away from digital native stereotypes in favour of fostering digital literacy. As such, the educational technology community can play a vital role in shifting from popular conceptions of digital natives and toward developing digital literacy for the benefit of all learners. In this paper, we provide a comparative analysis of search data from Google Trends showing continued use of the term digital natives and the...

- This research investigated the relation between the degree of gated-ness of a neighbourhood and the level of neighbourhood cohesion among its residents. Such an investigation was prompted by the current practice of municipal planners for promoting a grid pattern of streets for neighbourhoods and linking such a pattern with principles of resilience and connectedness while at the same time condemning altogether the enclave pattern of curvilinear streets, loops and cul-de-sacs as being non-resilient and non-sustainable. Municipal planners seem to overlook the reasons behind the morphological development of postwar suburbs as well as overlook, in particular, socio-psychological effects of...

- There is a great deal of research pertaining to the standards and regulations required to create “accessible” spaces. However, by only following minimum recommendations and guidelines, facilities are falling short of meeting and exceeding all people’s accessibility needs. Introduced in 1988, The City of Calgary mandates measures that follow established Access Design Standards (ADS), which exceed Alberta Building Code requirements. While these standards are required in all new City of Calgary buildings and renovation projects, they are not required to integrate the standards into existing infrastructure. Research indicates that the built environment directly reflects society's...
