Description / Synopsis
This year’s inspirational closing keynote at the MRU SoTL Symposium in Banff was Andrea Webb from The University of British Columbia. She stopped by the podcast table to discuss the “wonderful flattening of space and place” that can happen at a great conference. As we return to our schools, she asks educators to think critically about the ways we bump up against boundaries and borders and asks us to really challenge those problematic assumptions that come from engrained ways of doing.

A unique part of the MRU SoTL Symposium in Banff is Pop-up Poetry, developed to help conference participants distill and reflect their experiences in a most beautiful setting. Calgary-based poets Richard Harrison and Beth Everest set up their manual typewriters in a public space where participants are invited to sit down and chat. Richard and Beth, along with Michelle Yeo (a poet herself and the former director of the Mokakiiks Centre for SoTL) explore with me the idea of pop-up poetry as conference pedagogy.

Pop-up Poetry is a fixture at the Banff SoTL Symposium where poets Richard Harrison and Beth Everest invite attendees to share an idea, a word, really anything that is percolating. A short exchange soon results in a finished poem for the attendee to take away, likely never again to be seen by the poet. Thanks, Richard and Beth, for stopping by the podcasting table to share this delightfully creative approach to capturing our experiences.

Description / Synopsis
In this reflection, a group of undergraduate research assistants and student changemakers use a podcast to explore which students are at the research table and what barriers are keeping many others away. This student- and faculty-authored paper, which includes a SoTL-inspired auditory experience, dives into multiple topics, such as gender, race, and socio-economic factors impacting students in relation to their research activities in an undergraduate setting. Faculty listeners and readers are encouraged to reflect on the recruitment process they use in finding their student partners. The hope is that this article helps post-secondary leaders better serve underrepresented populations across the undergraduate research field by implementing equity, diversity, and inclusion practices in all student-as-partners work.
